Your hair begins growing at the root in a pouch-like tube called the “papilla”. From there it pushes out of a tiny opening in your skin called a “follicle”. The number of hair follicles in the scalp is fixed somewhere between 90,000 and 150,000, and each one is equipped with sebaceous gland sacs that pump lubricant to your hair. Capillaries contained in the papilla nourish your hair by linking your body’s blood supply to each growing hair shaft.

When they are stimulated by androgen (sex) hormones, especially the male hormone testosterone, follicle cells convert vital amino acids from your body into keratin (the tough waterproof protein that forms each hair strand as it emerges from the follicle).
